Q: Do I really need to be concerned about a cyber attack on my very small law office?

A: Yes! A very recent survey reported that cyber criminals struck 41% of very small businesses last year.

Maybe you have become dulled to cyber risks. Your office hasn't been struck and you know you have a firewall and antivirus software.

Unfortunately, the one in five very small businesses hit by an attack had those, too.

micro businesses (1 to 9 employees)
small businesses (10 to 49 employees)medium businesses (50 to 249 employees)

Micro businesses had the lowest level of prioritizing cyber security: 19 percent lower than small businesses and 25 percent lower than medium businesses.

54% of professional organizations sought guidance from cyber security consultants, IT consultants or cyber security providers.

Phishing

Phishing attacks remained the most prevalent type of breach or attack by far (experienced by 85% of businesses and 86% of charities that experienced a breach or attack in the last 12 months). You might think that you would never fall for a fake email. The problem is, some phishing emails are extremely accurate at duplicating the look of an email from companies you may use, such as UPS, Fedex, Microsoft and others. All it takes is a moment when you are distracted while reading emails to click on an infected link.

So, yes, be careful about avoiding cyber attacks in a small office!
